Becky and David Lockman began Camp Summer Spree at their home on ten acres in Watkinsville, Georgia, in June 2003.  This unique camp was free to participants, providing a summer recreational and learning experience to under-served youth of the Athens/Clarke area.  Because of circumstances beyond their control, these youth would not otherwise have had the opportunity to participate in a traditional camp atmosphere.  It was the purpose of Camp Summer Spree to offer such an experience.

By 2010 a number of our children were advancing into their late teens with many expressing a desire to attend college.  At this time the Board reassessed the Camp’s mission and decided to concentrate its major energies and finances on assisting campers in their pursuit of post-secondary education. This led to our facilitating the students in making applications to colleges and technical schools, providing transportation to testing sites, taking them on college tours, assisting them with tutoring when needed. For those who enter college on a fulltime basis, the Camp provides a laptop computer, fees for books, dorm deposits, bus passes, and other miscellaneous items.  For those students who may have dropped out of high school, the Camp provides them with help and encouragement in pursuing their GED’s. The campers who still remain in high school are offered summer enrollment in local summer day camps as well as overnight camp. Upon graduation from high school, they too will be offered assistance in their educational endeavors.

Mission Statement:

Camp Summer Spree brings community members together to make a positive difference in children’s lives.  We provide a fun, nurturing and educational environment, where kids who need an extra measure of support are guided and encouraged to realize their full potential and individual value.

The philosophy of Camp Summer Spree can be described in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “If we are to reach real peace in this world, we have to begin with the children.”
